Do you fast? Maybe you should as fasting could lead to a longer life!
Not long ago, I ran across an article with this headline: “Scientists say five-day fast-mimicking diet safe.” The line below it read: “The diet reduced biomarkers in participants for aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.”
Well, with a headline like that I had to read the entire story and am glad I did!
From the article at UPI:
A diet that mimics fasting decreased risk factors and biomarkers for aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer with no major adverse side effects in a small study by researchers at the University of Southern California.
The diet doesn’t require any major changes to what people eat, except for five days per month when participants caloric intake is cut to between 35 and 55 percent of normal, which allows the body to cleanse and rejuvenate, the researchers said.
This isn’t the first time I’ve read about calorie restriction leading to a healthier body and longevity. Years ago when Oprah still had her mainstream talk show, she had a program on Longevity (it’s one of the first places I learned of Dan Buettner and the Blue Zones).
She featured a 51 year old man who restricted his caloric intake and according to his doctors, had the heart of someone 3 decades younger. Not only that, but they believe he may be the first person to live naturally to the age of 150. You can read about it here.
The monkeys make me cringe. No living creature should spend decades in a cage. Anyway … what do you think? Do you believe restricting your calories or doing intermittent fasting can lead to longer life?
